Background
Between 1987 and 2007, Laidlaw Education Services (LES) was the largest private operator of school buses in the world. LES engaged Mark G. Gardner in 1998, before Avatar was formed, and continued its relationship with him for 20 years. During this time, and as a result of Avatar’s assistance, LES grew from 16,000 school buses operating at 170 locations to 48,000 buses at 450 locations. LES and Avatar remained constant partners throughout this period.
A single accident with a child can end a local contract. A catastrophic accident can result in a system-wide bankruptcy. For this reason, LES invested, on average, $500,000 per year in the development of best practices.
